Pre-Season Just 2 Months Away

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Captain's Blog and to the upgraded v2.0 blogsite just in time for the up-and-coming 2008 season.

My last post was on 13th September 2007, nearly 5 months ago. If, like moi, you have been counting down the months till the start of the season - which is on Sat 26th Apr (Dunmow, home, 2pm start - can't say you haven't had fair warning) then I thought you'd appreciate an insight into how I have handled the long, dark winter months that have edged along at a truly glacial pace:

Oct. went to New York, attended the Diner Dance, decided to extend the house, started running again, 13st 4lbs

Nov.heavy work load - not much happened, planning permission rejected, 13st

Dec. Christmas, decided to enter into negotiations to sell the company, 12st 7lbs

Jan. into 2008 and the season is just around the corner.... Ed has his first foot operation, 12st 4lbs (disappointing)

Feb.is it my imagination or is it now lighter in the mornings? Planning permission approved! GCCC AGM, 11st 12lbs (have been going for it)

March. Bright mornings, a feeling the season is now just around the corner, work on house starts in 2 weeks, 11st 11lbs (more meat on a butcher's pencil)

So that's been my winter basically. Sorry there have been no winter nets but its been a right arse-ache trying to sort it out so I gave up. However, spring nets start ON SUNDAY 13TH APRIL, 2pm at the ground. Jamie will cut a practise strip just like last year. This will be a good opportunity for everyone to remember how it all goes and to at least pretend to be ready and to get our confidence up by smacking Ali all round the ground. I will also be trying out a new delivery... yes, the one that pitches on leg and goes... straight on to leg.

Big news - we have a cricket tour this season!! Keep the w/e of Sat 19th/Sun 20th July free. We're going on tour to Suffolk, playing Southwold on the Saturday and Branesden on the Sunday (thanks to Clint for sorting this out). We will be staying Fri night (optional for those who want to drive down on the day) and Sat night nr Southwold on the coast, then travelling to Branesden on the Sunday, then home. Should be a right larf. If you want to sign up let me know ASAP - we want about 13 or so. Jamie, Angus, Clint, me and Ali I think are all in. And Stuart will be staying in his holiday mansion and has promised to play one of the games. Budget about £120 a night for the hotel + beers/food. We can travel down in a convoy in about 4-5 cars. Wahay!

I have circulated the minutes of the AGM. 2 highlights to note. 1) well done to Bretty, PoB and Brucie for being made Vice Presidents of GCCC. Well done chaps - a great way to recognise your service and value to the club. 2) we got over £3,000 from the National Lottery which will be used to improve the practise net area (levelling and re-laying) plus whatever else Jamie think we need.

Our first match is only 8 weeks away and our first practise session only 6 weeks away. That 42 days before we pick up a bat and ball for the first time in ages. So get fit, lay off the beer and sort your kit bag out. The season is about to start.

This is Captain Blog signing off.

Cheers

Jon aka The Preecherman
